One more annoucement

I have the fabric for the Madrona Road Challenge, but it is not yet cut into fat eighths to be handed out.  The winter storm thwarted our efforts to get together to cut it up and it seemed kind of big task to do alone, so I thought we could all bring our cutting mats, rulers, and rotary cutters to the next meeting and we can get the job done quickly together. 

I learned a couple other things about the challenge, too.  You are allowed to add other colorways of the Madrona Road fabric, so if any of you already bought some in another color, feel free to use it!

Also, Michael Miller will be featuring some of the challenge projects in their booth at Quiltcon and if you are interested in your project possibly being there, it needs to be done by January 31st and then added to the Flickr group here.

However, for our group, you do not need to have your project done by January 31st.  We will be sharing our projects at the March meeting.

2013 Service Project: Blankets for Foster Children

When the guild leaders sat down to plan this year's activities, we decided that it would be a good idea to have a guild service project.  We have all so much (and I'm not just talking about fabric!) that we can give back to our community.  We decided that providing blankets for Foster Care Kits would be a great way to put our sewing skills to work to help others.

When a child is in an abusive or neglected home situation, Child Protective Services will take them into custody.  The children are placed with Foster Families until their home is safe to return to.  The children often show up on their foster parents doorsteps with just the clothes on their backs and in a state of emotional turmoil.  Foster Care Kits are meant to help make this painful situation a bit better.

Example of a Foster Care Kit:  Fleece blanket, toothpaste, toothbrush, pjs,
 stuffed animal, car and large drawstring bag

A Foster Care Kit Contains:

1. Basic Hygiene Items:  toothbrush, toothpaste and brush/comb.  It may also include rubber bands, barrettes, deodorant and lotion.  (Items may be travel sized)
2. Pajamas  It may also contain clothing, socks, underwear or diapers.
3. Blanket   (45x45 for 0-2 year old, 45x54 for3-6 year old, 54x66 for 7-11 year old, 54x72 for 12-18 year old)   Sizes are approximate, but the blanket needs to be big enough for the child.  The blankets may be fleece or pieced.  Foster Care Families will have blankets and beds for the children, but this blanket is something soft and special for the child that they can snuggle with and keep forever.
4. At Least One Comfort Item  Some ideas include:  doll, coloring book/crayons, notebook, journal, pen, pencils, book or stuffed animal.  No one is too old for a stuffed animal, especially when you are going through hard times.

All of these items are collected and placed in a bag.  It is best if the bag can be zipped, buttoned or velcroed so that the contents are not mixed up or lost.  A drawstring bag also works well.  The contents of the bag, age and gender of the child are written on a note card and pinned to the outside of the bag.  The bags are collected and brought to local agencies that place foster children.

We will be teaming with the Ankeny LDS Women's Relief Society to make these kits.  Our guild will be responsible for making blankets for the kits.  The blankets do not have to be anything elaborate.  Fleece blankets are perfectly acceptable.  We will be sharing ideas for quick and easy blankets throughout the year at guild meetings.  If you would like to make totes, large drawstring bags, pajamas or stuffed animals that would be great also.  We will collect the blankets and any other iteams that you would like to donate at our October Guild meeting.  The blankets will then be given to the LDS Relief Society and they will be responsible for providing the additional items and putting the final kits together.

I think it would be great if we could provide at least 100 blankets for this project.  Is that a big goal?  Yes, it is, but we can do it!  :)  Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is anything that I have left out.  I have started a discussion thread on the Guild's Flickr site where we can post ideas/pics/tutorials for quick and easy quilts.  Please share any ideas you have!

Happy New Year! And Some Announcements

I hope you all have had a great time over the holidays!  I know we did, but normal life is about to restart and January's calendar seems to be already full!  I just wanted to remind you of some of the upcoming Guild happenings so you could get them on your calendar too.

• Thursday, January 17th - Guild Meeting @ 6:30 pm at the Urbandale Public Library.  Topic:  What is Modern Quilting?  We will also be handing out fabric for the Madrona Road Challenge.
• Saturday, January 19th - Sewing Day from 8 am to 10 pm (is that too late?) at the LDS Church in Ankeny (721 East 1st Street).   Be sure to bring your sewing machine, projects, snacks to share and an extension cord.  The church is located within 2 blocks of 9 different restaurants so you can plan to go out to lunch/dinner or bring a sack lunch.  We will have at least two irons and ironing boards there as well as a cutting mat, but feel free to bring your own if you would like.  There is no fee to attend and this would be a great event to invite a friend to!
• February 21st - Guild Meeting @ 6:30 pm at the Urbandale Public Library.  In addition to our program, we will be collecting place mats at this meeting to donate to Meals-on-Wheels.  Bring a few to donate! 
• March 21st - Guild Meeting @ 6:30 pm at the Urbandale Public Library.   Bring your Madrona Road Challenge projects to show.

Time:  8 am to 10 pm
Place:  The Ankeny LDS Church
            721 East 1st Street, Ankeny, IA
Bring:  Your sewing machine, projects, snacks to share and an extension cord.  The church is located within 2 blocks of 7 different restaurants so you can plan to go out to lunch/dinner or bring a sack lunch.  The church also has a refrigerator and microwave we can use.  We will have at least two irons and ironing boards there, but feel free to bring your own if you would like.  
Fee:  FREE!!!  This would be a great event to invite a friend to!

Next Meeting: Thursday November 15

Thursday is the next meeting of the Des Moines Modern Quilt Guild, and it's a special one, our holiday get-together!  Join us 6:30-8:30 pm at the Urbandale Library.

Please bring:

1. a treat to share (hors d'oeuvres, cookies, bars, beverage, etc)
2. a seasonal item to swap (can be any season or holiday; Thanksgiving, Autumn, Winter, Christmas, New Years, etc...
3. any Show & Tell!

How 'bout a new Challenge!?!

Madrona Road by Violet Craft for Michael Miller is the winner for the Winter Fabric Challenge through the MQG

We know how much you loved the Robert Kaufman Kona Challenge and the Jay McCarroll Habitat Challenge. 

We are happy to announce this year’s Winter challenge, Madrona Road by Portland Modern Quilt Guild Member, Violet Craft.

Once upon a time in the windy lands of the Old West a baby girl was born to a rooted father and a gypsy mother. And so begins the story of Madrona Road, a modern, sophisticated fabric collection of crisp florals, monochromatic textures and text prints.

Violet Craft is a momma, a wifey, a maker and a Sweet Hot Yam. She designs licensed fabric for Michael Miller Fabrics from her home in Portland, Oregon. Her newest collection, Madrona Road shipped to stores in July 2012 and her new collection of Distinctive Lifestyle Sewing Patterns will be released in Winter of 2012. Most days she can be found playing on Twitter, Flickr, Instagram and blogging.

The challenge begins December 1 and ends January 31. More details about the challenge will be posted on December 1.
